Scan app for open days at CHE

In collaboration with RaisingResults, we developed an app for the Christian University of Applied Sciences in Ede that allows for registration of attendees at open days. The system works with QR codes that can be scanned using the app.

The CHE (Christian University of Applied Sciences Ede) regularly hosts open days and other events. To keep track of who orders a ticket and attends these free events, a solution was needed for access management. Although there are many ticket services available, they are generally large and expensive packages. A user-friendly system that generates QR codes, works with scanners, can be customized to match the brand identity, and is also integrated with the Marketing Automation System used by the CHE was missing.

How does it work?

The scan app that we developed meets all the requirements and provides a solution for the CHE's free events. After registering for an event (open evening/day), attendees receive an email from Sharpspring, the Marketing Automation System. This email includes a unique QR code that can be scanned with the app, which is easy to install and use on a phone or tablet. The app then reports back to Sharpspring whether the ticket has been scanned and whether the person has attended or not.

Progressive Web App

The scan app is set up as a Progressive Web App, which is web technology that can be installed on the home screen of a mobile device and behaves like an app. Progressive Web Apps are a trend, and it is expected that about 50% of all apps will be executed as web apps in 2020. The app works independently of the operating system, such as Apple or Android. It also works without an internet connection during scanning and can be used on all mobile devices.

Umbraco for management

The scan app is connected to an Umbraco environment for managing customer-specific issues. This includes things such as:

  1. Branding and themes
  2. API settings
  3. User management

Different user groups are used within Umbraco to distrbute rights. The Umbraco environment also serves as the "bridge" between the Scan app and Sharpspring through an API. Within Sharpspring, follow-up actions can be taken for attendees and non-attendees.

As mentioned, the Scan app continues to work even with a faulty internet connection, and it also accounts for possible API malfunctions in Sharpspring. Umbraco temporarily stores the scans made by the app and can resend them later if necessary.

The Scan app is currently being successfully used during the CHE's open days.
